Ok, so I've tried to keep this blog fairly professional and based around photography, but I thought this was too ridiculous and hilarious to leave out and unnoticed. This guy has to be, without a doubt, one of the most ignorant people in the world.
Joe the Plumber, also known as Joe Wurzelbacher, is heading to Gaza to, what he says, find some real stories. You're right Mr. Plumber, be our savior because the NYTimes or BBC or Reuters or any of the other countless news outlets, who aren't being allowed into Gaza, don't know what they're doing and your expertise in cracks will surely allow you to slip in. The best part:
"I get to go over there and let their 'Average Joes' share their story, what they think, how they feel, especially with world opinion, maybe get a real story out there,” he said. I hope he gets a rude awakening by reality and comes back to being a plumber.

wtf. i can't believe this guy is a celebrity overnight. ridiculous.
Laugh me out of the room, but I'll say that being a plumber doesn't automatically make one ignorant, nor does having a journalism degree from a renowned institution make one an intelligent, objective, relevant, credible journalist (perhaps I'm a case in point). I say let the guy's work speak for itself, and if it's mediocre, then the proof is in the pudding.
Fwiw - Tully, in re-reading your post, I don't think you were speaking about plumbers, in general, but I'll maintain my basic contention nonetheless.
I guess I was just irritated by his claim that now maybe he can find the real stories and tell the stories of ordinary people. I just think that is an ignorant phrase because people have been trying to do that this whole time. I think his 15 minutes of fame got to his head a little too much. I applaud him for wanting to, presumably, make a difference, but I was just put off by the perception that he could just walk in and be a war correspondent. He'll probably go over, talk to some people, be on Oprah after he writes a book and judging by who appointed him to his celebrity status, I could imagine a heavy sway in his piece of fiction/memoir. Or, I could just be blabbering too much like I do a lot and I could be the ignorant person.
I think that's fair. Thanks for presenting us with the opportunity to discuss this. It will be interesting to see what comes of Joe's experience.
