A few from along the road

Housing Bill

Senators met Saturday morning in a rare weekend session to vote on the new housing bill that passed Saturday afternoon, July 25, 2008 in a 272 to 152 vote. President Bush has expressed support for the bill. Just some photos from senators talking with the media.

Iwo Jima

Mary Pero accepted a Certificate of Citizenship on behalf of her older brother, Marine Sgt. Michael Strank, on Tuesday July 29, 2008. Strank was one of the servicemen who raised the flag at Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945.

Gun Control

A photo from a project I am starting on gun control in Washington, DC. This is Dick Heller. He brought his case to the Supreme Court challenging the Second Amendment in the District of Columbia and won. I went with him to a gun show in Northern Virginia.

Story

I keep revisiting these photos and I don't know why. I keep looking through at possible edits, revisions, new ideas. But basically, I think it comes down to a longing for the experience and the desire to continue to work on this story. It has only become more complex and intense in Denmark and I feel useless just sitting here with ideas raging through my head about what I could shoot, who I could meet with and how to approach it. I just found this on my computer. It's a video I did for a multimedia art class my last semester. Goodbye Danish punks. To view video, click >HERE<

Dog Days

I met Jamie Hutton today in a park as he got out of his Jeep with about 9 dogs and passed by his license plate that read "RUFFDAY." He runs Ruff Day Dog Service based in Mt. Pleasant, DC. Really cool dude. He is in his forties, longboard skateboards around the city instead of using a car all the time, and has a son graduating from Army Reserves boot camp at the end of July.

In the Most Humble and Least Pretentious Way Possible...

I got a job.

I was going to wait a little and not really announce it, but I am entirely too excited and often can't control myself. This morning I accepted a job as a staff photojournalist at the Midland Daily News in Midland, Michigan and am incredibly honored and anxious beyond belief to start. I head to Michigan at the end of the summer to join a newspaper I saw and heard many a great things about while I was in school and interning over the past couple of years. Thanks to everyone who has been there with me through the ups and downs. As my parents said on my graduation day, "Who would have thought."

Zack Kellman...awesome

Zack is 20 years old and is an awesome kayaker who lives with his parents in Mclean, Va., when he is not at Montana State University in Bozeman, Mont., studying physical geography. It's been a pretty slow week at the paper so when I had some free time I met up with Zack at Great Falls Park as he was preparing for today's annual Potomacfest kayak race. He was .38 of a second from making the 10-man cut into the finals, beating professionals that came to race.

The Hill

Mitch McConnell, Senator from Kentucky and the senate minority leader, held a meeting in his office at the Capitol Monday afternoon discussing, mainly, issues dealing with the rising price of gasoline.

Metro

I got a call while on my way home to hang out in the metro around rush hour and focus on congestion and issues at the Metro stations.

DC on the Fourth

Great Falls

Carlos Gonzales, Edwin Gonzales, and Humberto Brito, from Great Falls, Va., fish off the cliff along the Virginia side of the Potomac River at Great Falls Park on July 5, 2008. The three are regulars who hand-toss their lines into the falls.

20080702_city walk

Today I had a day off so I headed out to wander the city a little and scout locations to photograph the fireworks on Friday night.

rainy walk

It started pouring on my way to get coffee.

outtake from an hour with Sheila Johnson

M.C. Antil, media strategist and friend to Sheila Johnson, is licked by Johnson's dog Molly. Johnson is part-owner of a WNBA team, the Washington Mystics, and is a huge supporter of the league. She is also one of the most successful businesswomen and philanthropists in the Washington area.

More images will be posted after they run in the paper, I believe this Sunday. I liked this frame, even though it won't be in the story.
